SYNOPSIS:

"Gods" is a cinematic story based on actual events from the life of Professor Zbigniew Religa, who in the 1980s conducted the first successful heart transplant in Poland. A portrait of an exceptional individual who dared to change the rules of the time.

By removing the heart from a human body, the professor broke moral, cultural and religious taboos. A few decades ago, heart transplantation was widely considered an act against nature.

The film shows the beginnings of the discussion on the definition of biological death of a human, and the boundaries of a surgeon’s competence. Together with a team of young doctors, Zbigniew Religa opposed his mentors. He struggled not only with the lack of funding and equipment but, most importantly, against antiquated ways of thinking.

This is a genuine portrait of a rebel, who always wanted to be the first. The professor saved thousands of human lives, but not all of his operations were successful. Each day, Religa made decisions which could decide the life and death of his patients. "Gods" is a film about extraordinary ambition and force of will, as well as the price of success.
