SYNOPSIS:
The main character, Roman Boryczko, a young peasant boy, gets a dishwashing job in a restaurant. He becomes acquainted with a reality in which, if you want to climb up, you’d better be a toady and a smart ass, be ready to bear humiliation and bullying by your senior fellow workers. Roman gets successive promotions, but he also does his best to avoid moral disgrace and preserve his empathy.
