SYNOPSIS:

The march of young Ramses’ army is stopped in its tracks by the High Priest Herihor, who notices two scarabs, the sacred representation of God Amun, battling in the desert sand. In order to bypass the beetles, the soldiers have to ruin a canal dug by a slave fellah. Ramses tries to resist the priest’s orders. The army crosses the canal and the powerless, infuriated Ramses abandons his troops and goes his own way. He meets, Sara, a beautiful Jewish woman. Enchanted by her beauty, he promises to take her long to his palace. Herihor tells the ruling pharaoh that Ramses is still not mature enough to assume command of the army. Ramses again suffers the limitless power of high priests. Separated from the matters of the state, he spends his time enjoying uninspiring feasts and soon his financial shortages makes him borrow money from Phoenicians. When Sara bears him a son, the queen and Herihor decide that the boy will be brought up as a Jew, a step that blocks his way to the throne. Meanwhile, the priests draw up a peace treaty with Assyrians which is disadvantageous to Egypt. Alarmed Phoenician merchants start supporting Ramses who openly declares that a war with Assyrians is a must.
